Curtis is the daughter Carmencita Ojales, a Filipina born in Bolinao Pangasinan, and James Ernest Curtis Smith, who was an Australian attorney. Her birthplace was Yarrawonga located in Victoria, Australia. Her father wed Ojales, a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan in 1982. Her younger sister, who is also an actor and her father is also an actor. Clare was a mother-in-law in their father's side. Clare passed away at the age of four months old in 2007.
